Athena Kim is a Korean abstract expressionist living in the Bay area whose abstract expressionism embodies complex personal feelings and body sensations. Each of her works is a profound personal journey into the depth of the subconscious and past personal experiences. In her art, she transmutes universal human emotions – joy, pleasure, anger, despair, love, lust, envy, contentment, sorrow, fear – into vibrant colors and tactile textures. Her signature Blue Space series evokes the depth of the nebula in cosmos with prickly, thickly-sculpted layer technique; like the nebula itself, these paintings look serene from a distance but can be menacing up close. Her layered compositions move the body before the mind, like the sun being obscured by the clouds, or coming out from behind them to warm your skin.
Athena Kim has shown her work locally at numerous galleries and exhibitions, including The Women's Building, Presidio Landmark, One7 Gallery, Public Glass, Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, The Troll House at Pier 26, the San Francisco Sheriff's Department, the Upload Collective, University of San Francisco, North Beach Bauhaus, Lyft HQ lobby, China Basin Landing, Senator Scott Wiener’s office in California State building in San Francisco, San Francisco Marriott Marquis, Neyborly Poet's Corner gallery in Berkeley, Playground Global in Palo Alto, Oakland Marriott City Center, Marica restaurant in Oakland, and Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute in Minneapolis. Her art has been recognized and collected by local, national, and international art collectors and exhibitors since 2016.
